More Detailed Bio
Dave is a seasoned executive with over 25 years of broad experience in venture capital,
finance, operations, and consulting. He served as VP and CFO at a number of startups and
early-stage companies including Electronics for Imaging, WordStar, General Magic, and
TOPS, a subsidiary of Sun Microsystems. Dave has raised significant capital from an IPO,
premier venture capital firms and strategic corporate investors.
After graduating from UC Berkeley with a degree in Business, Dave worked at Price
Waterhouse & Co., where he was promoted to Audit Senior. He spent the next five years at
oil and gas company Natomas as Manager of Strategic Pricing and Planning and other
financial roles. His first CFO role at WordStar was a great introduction to the challenges
associated with the world of venture backed startups. After helping take WordStar public and
three years as its CFO, Dave joined VC firm Adler & Co. as a Venture Manager and helped
start EFI. He later worked for VC firm Weiss Peck & Greer in a similar capacity.
After successful CFO roles at TOPS, a subsidiary of Sun Microsystems, and high-profile
personal communications startup General Magic, Dave started consulting with startups in
1993. Clients included Advance Fibre Communications, Coactive Computing Corporation,
Vicarious and C*ATS. He founded Venture Catalyst Group in 1996 to assist startups with
product definition, strategy, business planning and fund raising. Dave's most significant
projects included Rubric Software (acquired by Broadbase), PlaceWare (acquired by
Microsoft), WorldTalk (IPO and acquired by Tumbleweed), AFC (IPO and acquired by Tellabs),
TeamScape (acquired by PeopleSoft), Applicast (acquired by Agilera), Collabria (acquired by
HP), CrossCommerce ($20M Series A), MyBuys ($8M Series A), and Blue Chip Expert.
